Why You Recommend It: Our society--okay, most societies--are obsessed with romantic partnership. Quite literally I was asked the other day by my parents when I was getting married so I can have children... But this is not about me. I loved that Embodied spoke to people from different racial and gender identities about what building a fulfilling life outside of romantic partnership can look like.
As for one of the shows from this list, Expectant has me as a fan. I'm not typically into fiction podcasts but in reality, this isn't a work of fiction (perhaps why it's been called a hybrid of the two). A lot of us are asking hard questions about what life looks like and will look like as the climate crisis progresses. I think this audio series is a beautiful way to explore these philosophical questions. It's like being in someone's thoughts.
Episode: A Father's Day Special with Sarah Silverman
Why: This episode made me laugh and cry. I also love hearing about how Sarah Silverman makes friends in Hollywood. And it's just a blast to know that she enjoys playing pick-up basketball.
Lauren Passell, recommending the Sentimental Garbage episode specifically about Girls Just Want to Have Fun. I had no idea that Cyndi Lauper's version was a cover, it completely changed my thinking about the song. They really get into what the lyrics mean, it made me fall in love with the song even more. There aren't tons of lyrics in this song, but it's about so much!
Why You Recommend It: I've been feeling very existential lately. I'm unsure where my life is headed professionally, how I should distribute my energy right now and what I should prioritise. I've always known that my ideal career path looks a little bit like what the host of this podcast K2RAH is doing. She calls herself multi-creative and and interviews friends who like her have charted their own path full of creativity and variety. I found this show over the weekend after bumping into K2RAH's DJ set on an insta reel and being immediately inspired by the many things she does for a living. This first ep showed me it's a perfect find for my mindset right now so if you are at a similar place, this one is a great find and also let's be friends!!
Why you recommend it: This is a fascinating story about a Romani American young woman, her life, her culture and how they are intertwined with larger systems we don’t often think of. I am originally from Romania, the country with one of the largest populations of Romani people. As a journalist in the making, listening to such a well-made and well-documented series is an absolute treasure. It combines the personal with the political, creating plenty of space for both. There should be more awareness of Romani culture and this podcast does it beautifully!

Episode:
Paid Leave for All: An explainer on what it would look like, the fight to get it passed, and how not having paid leave for all impacts us all with Dawn Huckelbridge, Director of Paid Leave For All
Why You Recommend It: Sometimes I find politics can be redundant and exhausting, especially in recent times. Nonetheless, I still feel responsible to keep myself informed in the political loop. I like Girl and the Gov, The Podcast because I never feel burnt out by the end of an episode – plus the chit chat is always entertaining and relatable. This episode on Paid Leave for all is very conversational and entertaining, while also shedding light on how needed a national paid leave policy is. I recommend giving it a listen!
