Currently Obsessing over House of Skulls (only on audible). Mostly I wanted to listen to this because I love Marc Fennells work and rather than a season of short stories (a la Stuff the British Stole) it’s a whole season deep dive into one issue: The Morton Skull collection

Second recommendation is from the same studio producing Re: Dracula, so I might have a thing for horror 😈

The Hotel is also an audio horror drama is equally as immersive as Re: Dracula. Each episode is only minutes long but tells a different story of a guest’s demise at the hellacious Hotel through the pov of The Lobby Boy, The Manager, or The Owner. It’s deliciously scary. The hotel would get zero stars, but the podcast gets 5!

I love all these recommendations. I have 2. The first is Re: Dracula

Why I recommend it: it’s an audio drama that follows Bram Stoker’s Dracula in chronological order. The acting is top-notch (especially—though it pains me to say, for how much I love Gary Oldman and Keanu Reeves—in contrast to Coppola’s campy movie), and the horror is real. As an added bonus, there’s a completely unrelated Substack newsletter that is doing the exact same thing (a chronological retelling of the book) but purely in written form. You can read one while listening to the other, and it’s quite the marvelous pairing. Like Halloween and candy!

Hi! I am going to plug the podcast I direct and EP, "Beyond with Mike Kelton". It's a independently produced comedy docu-pod that follows our host, Mike Kelton, as he tries solving his everyday problems via supernatural means. We've already had two seasons in which we explored topics like mediums, psychics, searching for your guardian angel and we are finally back with our third season after a pandemic-induced hiatus! Our first ep is about hexes and our hosts foray into what he considers "dark magic" after a deep, life-altering betrayal. It’s a hilarious, heartfelt, beautifully sound designed show and our upcoming episode is PERFECT for Halloween! Listen to our first ep here: https://pod.link/1436195735

Because it's spooky season, I have been listening to a lot of Ruined! recently — in every episode, a horror superfan (Halle Kiefer) spoils a scary movie for her squeamish friend (Alison Leiby). I like a few horror movies, but I am much closer to Alison on the scaredy-cat spectrum, so it's a valuable service! Halle narrates the story in much the same way that Kelsey McKinney would tell you a Normal Gossip story, taking breaks to invite Alison to explain what *she* would do and make predictions. A good starting place is the episode from 2021 about The Descent, which has some infuriatingly stupid characters and a creepy twist.
