🤿 Sup Plungers,
I’ve been listening to A TON of audio content lately and I can’t wait to share it with you. There’s also a lot going on in the podcast space lately, so I am very busy over on Twitter sharing my thoughts with the world. (Also make sure to follow these people to keep up with podcast news).
What have you been listening to and loving lately? What social audio apps have you been avoiding lately? Let’s plunge into some of my favorite things.
Podcasts & related things I love lately:
1. This TikTok of Colin Stanley’s impression of Ira Glass
Thank you to Jackie Westfall for sharing this video on Twitter from @littlevictorianboy. I spat out my water.
2. Josh Spector’s newsletter advice
Josh Spector is the founder and head writer for a bunch of popular newsletters, including The Daily Graph and For the Interested. These publications are dedicated to helping creators run successful newsletters to further promote their content. I started following Josh a few months ago and have gained a lot of valuable insight about writing, audience growth and development, and more.
I’ve been saying for a while that podcasters looking to up their engagement with listeners should put out a newsletter at a regular cadence. Josh gives some great tips in this arena. I definitely recommend a follow.
3. PEOPLE Every Day
I love a quick, daily podcast. This is PEOPLE Magazine’s first podcast and it’s hosted by Janine Rubenstein, editor-at-large. The show is a combination of celebrity news, pop culture, and most importantly, why it matters. What I enjoy most about this show is that PEOPLE has access to huge celebrities who are being interviewed for a podcast, sometimes for the first time. It’s really a treat!
4. Sounds Profitable’s Rel’s Recs
Podcast ad-tech authority, Bryan Barletta, has asked me to contribute to his newsletter each week with a podcast recommendation. We’re calling this segment Rel’s Recs. Last week, I recommended one of my all-time favorites, Scam Goddess. Artist Jake Crowe will be parodying the recommended podcast’s artwork each week for the newsletter’s header image.
This coming week’s recommendation is…you’ll just have to subscribe to find out.
5. Obscure History’s episode on the worst Olympic event ever
In 1904, 32 people ran a very strange marathon in St. Louis. Some ended up in the hospital. Some were fed rat poison by their hype team (as a stimulant). Some ingested too much dust from vehicles that were following them around the course. Some cheated. This episode of Obscure History is a must-listen.
6. The Nocturnists’ artwork
Beautiful podcast cover and episode artwork has been the difference for me between listening to and passing over a podcast. If you’re looking for inspiration, may I point you in the direction of The Nocturnists?!
It started as a live storytelling show for healthcare workers to share stories of joy, sorrow, and self-discovery. In 2018, the podcast was launched, featuring selected stories from live shows, coupled with intimate conversations between the storytellers and host Emily Silverman, MD. I recommend the podcast wholeheartedly, but if you’ve only got time to stare at these images from Nazie Jamalifard, that’ll do you some good, too.
7. That Latina to Latina reached 1M downloads!
Shoutout to Lantigua Williams & Co.’s Latina to Latina podcast for making it to 1 million downloads! They’re celebrating with 12 days of giveaways from Latina-owned brands.
Sweet. Thanks for tuning in. I hope that my favorite audio and podcast-related things of the past week or so become part of your favorite audio and podcast-related things.
